Apple’s latest iPhone launch has created plenty of excitement — and one number has caught everyone’s attention: ₹2,99,900. That’s the starting price of Apple’s new iPhone Duo in India. In the US, the same phone starts at $1,999.So why is the iPhone Duo so much more expensive in India?
The answer is more complicated than simply saying “high taxes.”
iPhone Duo Price: India vs US
| Model | US Starting Price | India Starting Price |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone Duo | $1,999 | ₹2,99,900 |
| iPhone 18 Pro | $1,199 | ₹1,64,900 |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | $1,299 | ₹1,79,900 |
At an exchange rate of approximately ₹95 per US dollar, the $1,999 US price is around ₹1.90 lakh.
But there is an important catch: Apple’s US prices are before sales tax, while Indian Apple prices include applicable GST.
1. GST adds to the Indian price
Smartphones in India attract 18% GST.
For example, the ₹2,99,900 iPhone Duo price includes approximately ₹45,747 of GST.
So comparing ₹2,99,900 directly with the US price of $1,999 is not a completely like-for-like comparison.
2. What about customs duty?
This is where many comparisons become misleading.
India reduced the basic customs duty on imported mobile phones from 20% to 15%. However, it would be incorrect to simply calculate 15% of the iPhone’s price and say that this explains the entire India-US price difference.
Apple now manufactures and assembles a significant number of iPhones in India. However, the supply chain still includes imported components and materials.
The actual customs impact therefore depends on the product and its sourcing and manufacturing arrangements.
3. Americans also pay sales tax
The $1,999 advertised US price isn’t necessarily the final amount paid by an American customer.
US sales tax varies by state and locality and is generally added at checkout.
Therefore, the actual India-US difference is smaller than a simple dollar-to-rupee conversion suggests.
4. Apple’s pricing is not just currency conversion
Apple does not price an iPhone in every country simply by converting its US price into local currency.
Regional prices can reflect taxes, duties, exchange rates, distribution and supply-chain costs, as well as Apple’s commercial pricing strategy.
The iPhone 18 Pro models have also become more expensive globally, with higher memory-chip costs reported as an important factor.
5. Why is the iPhone Duo particularly expensive?
The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable iPhone.
Unlike a conventional iPhone, it requires a completely different foldable display and hinge design. Reports have also indicated that the complexity of producing the device could limit initial supply.
This helps explain why the Duo has a high global starting price — not just in India.
So, why is the iPhone Duo expensive in India?
The short answer: it’s a combination of factors.
GST is one component. Applicable import costs, supply-chain expenses, currency movements and Apple’s regional pricing also play a role.
But there is no publicly available Apple breakdown showing exactly how many rupees of the ₹2,99,900 price represent manufacturing cost, taxes, logistics or Apple’s profit.
Therefore, saying “the iPhone Duo costs ₹1 lakh more in India because of taxes” would be an assumption unless supported by detailed cost data.
