What this advance tax calculator does

Advance tax for Tax Year 2026-27 is governed by Sections 403 to 408 of the Income-tax Act, 2025. This tool estimates your liability, splits it across the statutory instalments, tracks what you have already paid, and computes the interest running under Sections 424 and 425.

  • Liability from income or from a figure you already have — enter income under every head and let it compute both regimes, or type the tax straight in
  • Instalment schedule under Section 408 — 15%, 45%, 75% and 100% cumulative, with a live countdown to the next due date and the exact amount payable by then
  • Interest under Section 425 — computed instalment by instalment, honouring the 12% and 36% tolerance for the first two dates
  • Interest under Section 424 — where advance tax paid falls short of 90% of assessed tax, at 1% a month from 1 April 2027
  • Relief for late-arising income — capital gains, dividend, winnings and first-year business income are excluded from instalments falling due before they arise
  • Presumptive assessees — a single instalment by 15 March under Section 408(2)
  • Payment plan with challan particulars — ready for e-Pay Tax, with tax and interest shown separately

Advance tax due dates for Tax Year 2026-27

First instalment15 June 202615%
Second instalment15 September 202645%
Third instalment15 December 202675%
Fourth instalment15 March 2027100%

An assessee taxed on a presumptive basis under Section 58 pays the whole amount in one instalment by 15 March 2027. Tax paid on or before 31 March is still treated as advance tax for the year.

Who has to pay advance tax

Advance tax is payable under Section 403 by any person whose tax liability for the year, after credit for tax deducted and collected at source, comes to ₹10,000 or more. That threshold sits in Section 404.

The senior citizen exemption

A resident individual aged 60 or above who has no income from business or profession is not required to pay advance tax at all. The exemption is lost the moment there is business or professional income, and it never applies to a non-resident.

Interest for deferring an instalment — Section 425

Interest runs at 1% a month on the shortfall at each milestone: three months for each of the first three instalments and one month for the last. There is a tolerance — no interest arises if at least 12% is paid by 15 June or 36% by 15 September, against the headline 15% and 45%. The December and March milestones carry no tolerance. Each milestone is tested independently, so a June shortfall still costs three months even if the year is fully paid up later.

Interest for default in payment — Section 424

Where advance tax paid during the year is less than 90% of the assessed tax, interest runs at 1% a month on the shortfall from 1 April 2027 until the balance is paid. Part of a month counts as a whole month and the amount is rounded down to the nearest ₹100.
