The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced UPI Tap & Pay, a new contactless payment facility designed to make UPI transactions faster and more convenient. The feature was unveiled by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra at the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026 in Mumbai on September 10, 2026.
What is UPI Tap & Pay?
UPI Tap & Pay allows users to make payments by simply unlocking an NFC-enabled smartphone and tapping it on an NFC-enabled Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal. Unlike conventional UPI payments, users do not need to open their UPI application or scan a QR code for the transaction. The technology uses Near Field Communication (NFC) to establish a connection between the smartphone and the payment terminal.
Can UPI Tap & Pay Work Without Mobile Internet?
One of the major highlights of the new facility is that the customer’s smartphone does not need an active mobile internet connection for the payment. The POS terminal uses its own internet connectivity to process the transaction. This could make UPI payments particularly useful in situations where mobile connectivity is weak or unavailable.
UPI Tap & Pay: ₹5,000 Payment Without UPI PIN
According to the launch details, transactions of up to ₹5,000 can be completed without entering a UPI PIN. For transactions above ₹5,000, the customer will be required to authenticate the payment using the UPI PIN on the POS terminal.
The facility also supports multiple UPI-linked account types, including RuPay Credit Card on UPI.
Why Is UPI Tap & Pay Important?
The new facility can make everyday digital payments considerably quicker.
Instead of:
Open App → Scan QR → Enter Amount → Authenticate → Pay
the experience can become:
Unlock Phone → Tap POS → Pay
This could be particularly useful at retail stores, supermarkets, restaurants, transport counters and other high-volume merchant locations, where faster checkout can improve the overall payment experience.
UPI Continues to Expand
The launch comes as UPI continues to operate at massive scale. In August 2026, UPI processed 24.51 billion transactions worth ₹29.82 trillion, according to the latest data reported by Reuters.
The Government’s GFF 2026 factsheet also states that UPI processed 24,509 million transactions in August 2026 and currently operates in 11 countries.
UPI Tap & Pay is another step toward making digital payments faster, contactless and more seamless. By combining UPI with NFC technology, NPCI is reducing dependence on QR-code scanning and mobile internet during checkout.
As NFC-enabled smartphones and compatible POS terminals become more widespread, Tap & Pay could become an important part of India’s next generation of digital payments.
How UPI Tap & Pay Could Change Digital Payments in India?
UPI Tap & Pay could make everyday digital payments more convenient, particularly at busy merchant locations. Instead of opening a UPI app and scanning a QR code, customers can use an NFC-enabled smartphone to tap on a compatible payment terminal and complete the transaction.
This can be useful at supermarkets, restaurants, retail stores, fuel stations, transport counters and other locations where quick checkout is important. The ability to make eligible transactions without entering a UPI PIN can further reduce the number of steps involved in smaller-value payments.
Another important feature is that the customer’s smartphone does not require an active mobile internet connection for the transaction, as the payment terminal handles the necessary connectivity. This could improve the payment experience in areas where mobile data connectivity is inconsistent.
However, UPI Tap & Pay requires compatible NFC-enabled devices and merchant terminals. Its availability will therefore depend on the adoption of NFC technology by both consumers and merchants.
As UPI continues to evolve, features such as UPI Tap & Pay demonstrate how India’s digital payment ecosystem is moving towards faster and more seamless contactless payments.
