GST Registration for Small Businesses: Turnover Limits, Documents and Process
Not every small business must register for GST, but many should. Learn the thresholds, documents and steps to register online.
Whether you run a shop, a service business or an online store, one early question is: do I need GST registration? The answer depends on what you sell, where you sell and how much you earn.
Turnover thresholds
Registration is generally required once your aggregate turnover crosses a threshold in a financial year. The thresholds differ for goods and services and are lower in some special category states, so check the current limit applicable in your state on the GST portal. Many businesses are required to register regardless of turnover, including those that:
- Make certain inter-state supplies, especially of services or through e-commerce platforms.
- Sell through e-commerce operators who collect tax at source.
- Must pay tax under reverse charge, or are casual or non-resident taxable persons.
Should you register voluntarily?
Even below the threshold, registration can help. You can claim input tax credit, sell to businesses that want GST invoices, work with large buyers and online marketplaces and build credibility with banks when you apply for finance. The trade-off is regular compliance: monthly or quarterly returns, record-keeping and possible notices.
Documents usually required
- PAN of the proprietor, partners or company.
- Aadhaar of the proprietor or authorised signatory.
- Photograph and proof of identity.
- Proof of business address: electricity bill, property tax receipt or rent agreement with a no-objection letter.
- Bank account proof such as a cancelled cheque or statement.
- Business constitution documents for firms and companies.
Step-by-step process
- Open the GST portal and choose New Registration.
- Fill Part A with PAN, mobile number and email, and verify the OTPs.
- Receive a temporary reference number (TRN).
- Fill Part B with business details, addresses, bank details and upload documents.
- Verify with Aadhaar authentication or digital signature.
- Receive the ARN, then track approval. Some cases involve a physical verification.
After registration
Issue proper tax invoices, display your GSTIN, file returns on time (see our guide to GSTR-1 vs GSTR-3B) and maintain books. Consider the composition scheme if you qualify, as it simplifies compliance for small traders, though it limits credit and inter-state sales.
