Credit Score for Business Loans: What It Means and How to Improve It

Lenders check your credit history before approving a loan. Here is how scores work and how to improve yours.

When you apply for a loan, the lender checks your credit history with a credit bureau. For small businesses, the owner’s personal credit history is often examined along with the business’s, so both matter.

What a credit score is

A credit score is a three-digit number that summarises how reliably you have repaid borrowing in the past. In India, scores from the credit bureaus generally range from 300 to 900. A higher score signals lower risk. Many lenders treat a score of around 750 or above as good, though each lender sets its own criteria.

What affects the score

  • Payment history: on-time payment of EMIs and card bills is the biggest factor.
  • Credit utilisation: using a large part of your card limits can lower your score.
  • Credit mix and age: a long history with both secured and unsecured credit usually helps.
  • New applications: many applications in a short time can reduce the score.
  • Defaults and settlements: these stay on your report and weigh heavily.

What lenders look at beyond the score

For business loans, lenders also study financial statements, bank statements, GST and tax filings, and repayment capacity, including DSCR. Read what they look for in our guide on project reports and DSCR. Regular GST and tax filing supports your case, and clean books help. See bookkeeping for small businesses.

How to improve your score

  1. Pay every EMI and card bill on or before the due date.
  2. Keep card utilisation low.
  3. Do not apply for many loans at once.
  4. Check your credit report regularly and get errors corrected with the bureau and the lender.
  5. Settle overdue amounts in full instead of negotiating settlements, where you can.
  6. Keep older accounts in good standing.

Checking your report

You can obtain your credit report from each credit bureau, and Reserve Bank of India rules have provided for at least one free full report a year. The rules on reporting and access are being updated, so check the bureaus’ sites for the current number of free reports and the steps to get them.

Scores range from 300 to 900, and many lenders prefer around 750 or above. Criteria vary by lender.

Checking your own report is generally treated as a soft enquiry and should not reduce your score, unlike multiple loan applications.

Does my personal score matter for a business loan?

Often yes, especially for proprietorships and small firms where the owner’s credit history is reviewed.

How long does it take to improve a score?

It depends on the cause. Consistent on-time payment and lower utilisation usually show results over several months.
