GST Registration Amendment: Automatic Update After OTP Verification (REG-14)
Most GST registration amendments now take effect after OTP verification and online validation. Mandatory 3-day OTP window, PPoB exception and REG-14 tips.
The GST registration amendment process has changed. Under Notification No. 05/2026-Central Tax dated 26 October 2026, the rules on amendment of registration were substituted, and GSTN has updated the portal accordingly. In its advisory dated 1 November 2026, GSTN explained that most changes to a registration now take effect automatically after OTP verification and online validation, while changes to the principal place of business continue to be examined by the proper officer.

Two Types of GST Registration Amendment Now
1. Amendment of the principal place of business (PPoB)
If you change the principal place of business, the application is still examined by the proper officer in accordance with Rule 19 of the CGST Rules, 2017. This is not automatic.
2. Amendment of all other registration particulars
For other changes, the certificate of registration stands amended upon submission and online validation. The advisory lists changes such as:
- legal name of the business
- addition, deletion or retirement of partners, directors, Karta and similar persons
- additional places of business
- other particulars of FORM REG-01 apart from the principal place of business
OTP Verification Is Mandatory for GST Registration Amendment
Online verification of the mobile number and email address is compulsory for the following persons:
- the Primary Authorised Signatory, and
- one selected Promoter, Partner, Director, Karta, Member or Trustee, as applicable.
This OTP verification can be completed on the GST portal at Services > Registration > OTP verification of GSTIN, or through the direct link given in the advisory.
The 3-day rule: you get 3 days from the date of submitting the amendment application to complete the prescribed OTP verification. If it is not completed successfully within this period, the Application Reference Number (ARN) is not generated.
Online Validation of PAN, DIN and CIN
PAN, DIN and CIN, wherever applicable, are validated online by the system. The ARN is generated only after the required validations are completed. Once the verification and validations are successful, the amended registration certificate is made available on the common portal wherever applicable.
Practical Tips for GST Registration Amendment in REG-14

- Furnish accurate particulars and upload the correct supporting documents when you submit FORM GST REG-14.
- Complete OTP verification well within the 3-day window, or the application will not get an ARN.
- If you are changing the principal place of business, expect officer examination and plan the timeline accordingly.
- For composition taxpayers changing their category, REG-14 is also the route. Read our article on the Section 10(2A) composition category.
