14-Digit E-Way Bill Number from 1 January 2027: What Businesses Should Do
GSTN Advisory 687: e-way bill numbers move from 12 to 14 digits and consolidated e-way bill numbers from 10 to 11 digits from 1 January 2027. What changes and a readiness checklist.
The 14-digit e-way bill number is coming. In Advisory No. 687 dated 4 November 2026, GSTN announced that e-way bill numbers will go from 12 digits to 14 digits, and consolidated e-way bill numbers from 10 digits to 11 digits, with effect from 1 January 2027. The reason is simple: the volume of e-way bills has grown so much that the current numbering capacity is expected to run out. This article explains what is changing, who has to act, and a practical readiness checklist.

| Advisory | Revision in E-Way Bill and Consolidated E-Way Bill Numbering Formats (GSTN Advisory No. 687, 4 November 2026) |
| Effective from | 1 January 2027 (described in the advisory as a proposed revision) |
| E-way bill number | 12 digits now, 14 digits from 1 January 2027 |
| Consolidated e-way bill number | 10 digits now, 11 digits from 1 January 2027 |
| Who must prepare | Taxpayers, GSPs, ERP and software providers, and API integrators |
What Is Changing in the E-Way Bill Number Format
| Document | Existing format | Revised format (from 1 Jan 2027) |
|---|---|---|
| E-way bill number | 12 digits | 14 digits |
| Consolidated e-way bill number | 10 digits | 11 digits |
GSTN says the existing numbering capacity is expected to be exhausted because of the substantial number of e-way bills being generated. Adding digits gives the system far more room, and it is a change to the length of the number, not to how an e-way bill is generated or when one is required.
Who Needs to Act on the 14-Digit E-Way Bill Number
The advisory asks all stakeholders to make the necessary changes in their applications, APIs, database schemas and validation rules so that the revised formats are accepted. In practice, this affects:
- Businesses that generate e-way bills from accounting or ERP software, or through bulk upload.
- GST Suvidha Providers (GSPs) and API integrators, whose systems send and receive e-way bill data.
- ERP and software providers, whose products store, display, print or validate e-way bill numbers.
- Transporters and logistics companies that record or check e-way bill numbers, even if they do not generate them. This is our reading of who is affected; the advisory names taxpayers, GSPs, ERP providers and integrators.
Timeline: What GSTN Has Said So Far
- 4 November 2026: advisory issued.
- Shortly after the advisory: the revised formats will be released in the Sandbox environment for testing.
- On the E-Way Bill Portal: the relevant technical details will be published there.
- 1 January 2027: the revised numbering formats take effect. From the advisory date, that is roughly eight weeks.
The advisory asks everyone to be ready well before 1 January 2027 so that e-way bill operations are not disrupted.
Readiness Checklist for the New E-Way Bill Number Length
The first four points below follow what the advisory asks for. The rest are our practical suggestions for businesses and software teams.
- Database fields: check that every field storing an e-way bill number can hold 14 digits, and every consolidated e-way bill field can hold 11 digits.
- Validation rules: look for checks that accept only 12 or 10 digits and update them.
- APIs and integrations: confirm that data sent to and received from the E-Way Bill system, GSPs and transporters is not cut off at the old length.
- Test in the Sandbox: once GSTN releases the revised formats, run your generation, update, cancel and consolidation flows.
- Reports and exports: check Excel or CSV templates, MIS reports, and bulk upload and download formats for fixed column widths.
- Print layouts and QR codes or barcodes: make sure the longer number fits on invoices, delivery challans and e-way bill prints.
- Number stored as text: keep e-way bill numbers as text, not as numbers that could lose leading digits or be formatted in scientific notation in spreadsheets.
- Tell your people: brief dispatch, billing and logistics staff and your transporters about the new length.
What the Advisory Does Not Say
The advisory does not say how e-way bills generated before 1 January 2027 will be treated after the change, and it does not give an exact Sandbox date. Check the E-Way Bill Portal for technical specifications and updates before you finalise your system changes.
